After days of rain, we had a brief sun break. So I wandered down to the old orchard to visit the yaks. They were having a fine time in the mud. They pushed their heads into it, rolled around in it, and tossed it with their horns. I suppose it’s good for discouraging bugs and relieving itches. But I love how excited and playful they seem when they have mud.
One yearling did not seem to understand why I was not keen on scratching his soggy, muddy head. Go figure. He followed me around, begging for more, then gave up and went back to tossing mud with his horns.

Dirt mounds are, of course, particularly fun when muddy. Yaks love to play king/queen of the hill. Our calf, Paisley, is learning the game. She seemed pleased with herself when she held her position for a few moments after fending off the yearlings.
